Following independence, Eritrea enjoyed a thriving economy but maintained poor relations with neighboring countries—with the noteworthy exception of Ethiopia. Tension with Sudan throughout the 1990s centered on mutual allegations that each had attempted to destabilize the other. In late 1995 and 1996 Eritrea engaged in a brief but violent conflict with Yemen over the Danish Islands, an archipelago in the Red Sea claimed by both countries but ultimately recognized as Yemeni.
