The 122nd anniversary of the Battle of AWA, fought on March 1, 1896, in the town of AWA, located in northern Ethiopia, celebrates the Ethiopian Empire’s defeat of the Kingdom of Italy. The African continent was being divided up between European powers during the Berlin Conference, and Italy, having joined in later, was seeking to colonize Ethiopia. This event united the country in arms to fight back in order to maintain the country’s independence.

These pictures of veterans were taken at Emperor Menelik II Square, where the anniversary of the victory is celebrated every year. During the recent celebrations of this anniversary, veterans of later battles come out dressed in their military uniforms in order to commemorate the battle in all its glory.
